![]() ![]() Set in a recognisable suburb of Jonesland complete with repetitive wall patterns, duplicated portraits and endless lateral processions, this Boris is a close-focused drama of ambition, usurpation and assassination.īoris Godunov is crowned Tsar following the mysterious death of the true boy-heir, Dmitry. It comes at a cost, since the absence of tacked-on heroine Marina means one of the opera's most celebrated scenas is missing, but the gains in dramatic tautness are unmistakable. More often nowadays we hear the subsequent revision, amplified by an act and with an extra shot of lyricism - a latte to the original's espresso - but, as Richard Jones's interval-free production demonstrates, in wise hands Mussorgsky's two-hour version of 1869 makes the nerve-ends tingle. ![]() ![]() The Royal Opera is presenting the composer's cut of Boris Godunov and it's lean, mean and caffeinated. ![]()
